Though there aren’t many choices of where to eat in Churchill, Manitoba, the restaurants that are available often serve exclusively homemade food with local ingredients, meaning you’re in for a tasty meal.
Expect a lot of bison, Arctic char, and elk on the menu, and many meals feature wild berries and mushrooms that have been sourced from the seemingly barren landscape. In Churchill, chefs are known for being extremely resourceful, and their innovations definitely pay off. It’s also worth mentioning that all of the below restaurants are available for take-out as well as dining in. But be warned: many restaurants in Churchill are seasonal (people mostly visit because it is the hot spot for polar bears in Canada), so if you’re visiting in low or off-season, the restaurants may be closed.
Without further ado, here are the best restaurants in Churchill, Manitoba.
The Best Churchill Restaurants
Tundra Pub
Location: 23 Franklin Street
When it comes to Churchill restaurants, you need to try the Tundra Pub… it was even featured on the Food Network’s hit show You Gotta Eat Here! Found across the street from the Tundra Inn, this lively pub is known for its excellent food, fun atmosphere, and great service. You’ll find both locals and tourists at the Tundra Pub, making it a fantastic place to meet people who share a love of Churchill.
Open late in the evenings, settle in with a pint and enjoy a warm, hearty meal after a day exploring the Arctic. With delicious daily specials, there’s also a set menu that features plenty of old favourites such as poutine, chicken fingers, and pierogis. If you’re feeling adventurous, however, go for the pickerel or bison tacos. The Arctic char is incredible, and the famous Borealis Burger shouldn’t be missed.
After dinner, stick around for a game of pool, live music, or an open mic night. Only open seasonally, it’s always best to check their website or give either the pub or the inn a call to make sure they’re open.
Lazy Bear Cafe
Location: 313 Kelsey Boulevard
Found inside the Lazy Bear Lodge, the Lazy Bear Cafe is a cozy spot that’s perfect for any meal of the day, as they open early and close late (although they’re closed for winter and spring). With decor consisting of hand-built log furniture and a stone fireplace, the Lazy Bear Cafe is known around town for its beautiful venue and its family-friendly vibe.
At the Lazy Bear Lodge, the food is always exceptionally tasty and beautifully prepared; on the menu, you’ll find many staples of Indigenous cuisine such as Braised Peppered Elk, Arctic char, and Manitoba Bison. As the owners have recently opened a greenhouse, chefs are able to prepare dishes with fresh, local ingredients. Meals are often prepared using wild berries and mushrooms that have been foraged from the tundra itself, meaning your plate is always a culinary adventure of the Arctic. Please note that alcohol isn’t served at Lazy Bear Cafe.
The Lazy Bear Cafe is one of our favourites in town, and definitely one of the best restaurants in Churchill.
The Reef Restaurant in the Seaport Hotel
Location: 215 Kelsey Boulevard
Another of the best restaurants in Churchill, the Seaport Hotel is home to The Reef Restaurant and The Reef Coffee Shop. Whether you’re after a fine dining experience or a lighter snack, there’s a good selection of menu choices. Open early in the morning until late at night, the Reef Restaurant is also one of the only restaurants in Churchill that is open year-round, so it’s ideal for those who visit in the off-seasons of winter or spring.
With a menu that ranges from fine dining options of filet mignon and baby back ribs to more casual meals of burgers, sandwiches, and salads, there’s something for everyone at The Reef Restaurant. Eager to warm up after a day exploring Churchill? Try a hot chocolate or a latte in The Reef Coffee Shop to get the chill out of your bones.
Want to keep the evening going? There’s also The Pier Beverage room for late-night drinks and dancing.
Dancing Bear Restaurant
Location: 152 Kelsey Boulevard
Ask a local about restaurants in Churchill and they’ll probably mention the Dancing Bear Restaurant. Found inside the Churchill Hotel, the bar has a friendly atmosphere and the service is fantastic. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you should always check with the restaurant first to make sure they are open, as seasonal closures are common.
As for the menu, the food is basic but filling, and you’ll find items such as pizza, chicken wings, nachos, and lasagna. For lunch, there’s a good selection of soup and sandwiches. You can also stop in for a coffee or a beer depending on the time of day, as there’s always a warm vibe at the Dancing Bear.
Gypsy’s Bakery and Restaurant
You may see Gypsy’s Bakery and Restaurant included in some outdated guides to Churchill. Unfortunately, Gypsy’s burned down in 2018 and is no longer open.
